Quality & Safety Achievements
Metro Health is proud of the many local, regional and national awards we have received. Some of our recent honors include:
- Named a Top 100 Hospitals National Award winner three years in a row by Thomson Reuters, a leading independent provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. The national awards for 2006, 2007 and 2008 recognized Metro Health's excellence in the teaching hospitals category. The 100 Top Hospitals in the Nation award honors hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency and other benchmarks when compared against their peers. www.100tophospitals.com
- 2008 Silver Performance Achievement Award from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry as part of its inaugural Acute Coronary Treatment and International Outcome Network "Get with the Guidelines" program. The award acknowledged Metro Health's efforts to deliver high-level quality care to patients experiencing a heart attack.
- Best Acute Care Hospitals Award from Total Benchmark Solutions (TBS), January 2007. The award was based on 2005 quality measures provided by health care organizations to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Metro Health was recognized for its treatment of heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia. In January 2006, Metro received TBS's Top 100 Quality Award for overall performance. www.totalbenchmarksolution.com
- Governor's Award for Quality & Safety. For both 2006 & 2007, Metro Health Hospital received the Recognition of Excellence for being a top-performing hospital in Michigan. The hospital was also honored in other award categories, including Appropriate Care Measures, Surgical Care Improvement, Emergency Department and Systems Improvement/Health Information Technology. Metro Health Hospital has received Governor's Awards since 2003. Metro Health physician offices have also been honored for quality improvements five years in a row. www.mpro.org
- As part of the West Michigan Glycemic Collaborative, Metro Health Hospital was recognized as the Diabetes Champion of the Year by the Michigan ADA. This was based on innovative approaches to the management of diabetes. October 2009.
- Recognized with the Outstanding Performance on Dysphagia Screening by the Michigan Stroke Registry and Quality Improvement Project and the Michigan Department of Community Health. 2009

- Recipient of VHA (Voluntary Hospitals of America) Leadership Award for clinical excellence in the care of patients with heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia (2005, 2007, 2008). http://www.vha.com/
- First community hospital in Michigan to receive permission to provide emergent angioplasty to heart attack victims, 2004.
- Each year, the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) offers awards to osteopathic physicians and programs in recognition of exemplary efforts in health care. The following is a list of awards that Metro Health Hospital's programs and physicians received from the AOF in 2005.
- Astra Zeneca Healthy Heart Award Emergent Angioplasty Service: In recognition of facilitating dramatic improvements in the health care environment by focusing on the global fight against coronary heart disease. (Metro Health Hospital is the first in Michigan approved to provide emergency angioplasty without surgical back-up and one of the few in West Michigan to offer this service. Emergent angioplasty/stent is the advanced cardiac service at Metro that opens blocked blood vessels during a heart attack.)
- Glaxo Smith Kline Breath of Life Award Breton Health Center Asthma Program: In recognition of programs that facilitate dramatic improvements in the health care environment by focusing on the management of asthma in adults and/or children.
- American Osteopathic Foundation Spirit of Humanity Award: Metro Interpreter Center. In recognition of extraordinary efforts to provide urgently needed health care services to the indigent, underserved, or those with barriers to quality health care. http://www.aof-foundation.org/
