Surgical Stay

At Metro Health, our multidisciplinary surgery teams are focused on providing our patients with the best experience and the highest quality of care. From the Dan and Eunice Pfeiffer Surgery Center that offers a comfortable waiting area and private consultation rooms for loved ones to talk to doctors, to the prep and recovery area designed to provide patient privacy, to the large surgical suites, everything in Metro Health’s surgery department is designed to improve the patient’s experience.

Behind the scenes, that same attention to detail is central to how our clinicians provide their services and why they have been recognized with numerous surgical quality awards.

Metro Health is proud to participate in the Keystone Surgery collaborative. The Keystone initiative includes face-to-face workshops and monthly conference calls with surgical teams and Michigan Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center leadership to share learning and measurement tools and other forms of communication. Through the Keystone Surgery project, clinicians are improving patient outcomes by preventing surgical-site infections and preventing errors in the operating room.

Metro Health also participates in the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC). MSQC is a collaborative of Michigan Hospitals dedicated to overall surgical quality improvement, including better patient care and lower costs. Founded in 2005 under the sponsorship of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, it provides hospitals with practical approaches to better patient outcomes and lower costs. We also actively benchmark our results to other top hospitals to provide insight into how well we are doing as an organization. Click here to learn more.

In 2008, Metro Health added the daVinci Surgical System as a tool to improve surgical quality. The daVinci system is a state-of-the-art robotic platform that allows surgeons to perform complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions instead of through traditional incisions. Patients are able to recover more quickly and experience less discomfort because of the small incisions.

Metro Health Hospital is proud to be the first hospital in Michigan to offer RenaissanceTMĀ Guided Spine Surgery. Renaissance is a specially-designed surgical guidance system that enables surgeons to provide safer and more accurate minimally-invasive and open spine surgeries. Its state-of-the-art technology allows our surgeons to pinpoint the exact location on the spine – with accuracy levels far superior to traditional free-hand surgeries. Click here to learn more.

Evidence of Metro Health’s quality in surgery is in some of the awards the organization has won:

  • Repeated Governor’s Awards for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting in the category of Surgical Care Improvement Project
  • Surgical Performance Improvement Project (SPIP6) Commitment to Quality Award for efforts to improve the delivery of care by reducing surgical complications
  • Recognized by HealthGrades for excellence in spine surgery, orthopedic surgery and prostatectomy.
