Metro Health Hospital has received a national award from the American Stroke Association for its success at treating strokes.

Metro Health is one of only three hospitals in Michigan to receive the
annual performance award this year. The award recognizes Metro’s
performance in seven core areas related to the treatment of stroke,
including medications delivered on arrival and during the hospital
stay, as well as smoking-cessation and cholesterol-reduction advice and
medications after discharge.

"Patients get the best stroke care at Metro Health because of our team
approach," said Dr. Suheb Hasan, medical director of Metro’s stroke
unit. "Our stroke coordinator works with all aspects of stroke care,
from the emergency room staff and nursing education through
rehabilitation. This seamless approach ensures excellent communication
and results in exceptional care."

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. A
recent American Stroke Association study shows that baby boomers may
know the signs and symptoms of stroke, but don’t see stroke as a major
health risk. The risk for strokes increase at the age of 55.
Controllable risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol, blood
pressure and obesity.

"We are very pleased to be among a select group of hospitals in
Michigan and around the country who have achieved 85 percent or higher
in selected stroke quality indicators," said Mike Faas, president and
CEO of Metro Health. "As a certified stroke center, Metro Health is
committed to delivering exceptional treatment in order to minimize the
effects of this devastating disease."
