Metro Health Village has been named Newsmaker of the Year for 2007 by The Grand Rapids Business Journal.
The Village development was recognized during a meeting of the Economic Club of Grand Rapids for the "long-term economic promise" it brings to West Michigan. The Grand Rapids Business Journal recognized development partners Metro Health and The Granger Group for the new 170-acre Metro Health Village, which is anchored by the new $170 million Metro Health Hospital.
Metro Health Village was selected by a team of reporters and editors from The Grand Rapids Business Journal and its sister publication, Grand Rapids Magazine. Economic analysts who reviewed the list, which included the new J.W. Marriott and other large economic projects in the region, told the publication they were "impressed with the breadth of activity (of) those profiled."
The awards, now in their 15th year, annually recognize 10 of the top organizations, people or businesses that are significant "newsmakers" during the just-completed year. A special breaking news alert from the publication noted that "Metro Health Village holds significant promise: When development is done, the area could host thousands of jobs and generate millions in property tax revenue."
In accepting the award for Metro Health, CEO and President Mike Faas noted: "We are both surprised and deeply honored to be recognized by The Business Journal for the impact of the new hospital and the Village. As a community hospital, our vision is to provide the best experience for patients, physicians, staff and the community.
"Our new hospital and the surrounding Village have quickly become a destination for West Michigan. We are gratified that our labors have won such immediate and widespread response from the community, and look forward to continued growth and development in the years to come."
Gary Granger accepted the award on behalf of The Granger Group, commenting, "We are humbled by this recognition and honored to partner with Metro Health. It has been our pleasure to bring our experience in development, financial structuring as well as our governmental relationships to aid in the success of this project."
Metro Health Hospital serves as the anchor of Metro Health Village, a campus consisting of office, retail, restaurants, wellness facilities and related services dedicated to promoting healthy living. Metro Health Hospital moved into its new 208-room facility on Sept. 30. The hospital was designed and built to be one of the first LEED-certified hospitals in the nation and built to promote the healing process. This 170-acre Village is a first in the nation in its commitment to LEED standards for all facilities.
