Metro Health Offers Discounted Care & Payment Plan

Posted: April 23, 2009

MetroCare In an effort to make health care more affordable in West Michigan, Metro Health Hospital has launched a program to provide discounted health services and a payment plan for community residents without adequate health insurance.

Metro Health is the first area hospital to offer discounts of 40 percent on all healthcare services to patients who do not have health insurance through its new Metro Care program. The discounted pricing for services such as physician office visits, lab work, physical therapy, surgery and all other medical services would be comparable to insured contracted pricing.

Metro Health has also introduced CarePayment, a payment plan that allows patients to divide their out-of-pocket health expenses into interest-free payments spread out over the space of 25 months. CarePayment is open to anyone needing extra time to pay their hospital bills. The program will be extended to Metro Health physician offices in the future.

To support costs associated with the program, Metro Health Hospital Foundation has established an endowment. Proceeds from the Foundation’s annual Feelin’ Grand fundraising dinner, scheduled this year for September 12, will be used to support the new endowment.

"We recognize that many people in our community are struggling to make ends meet because of the economy," said Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health. "Not only does a job loss bring with it the loss of a paycheck, it can also mean the end to health insurance. This has prompted many West Michigan residents to delay or avoid visiting their doctors because they are worried about the bills.

"Our solution is Metro Care, which will offer reduced pricing and an interest-free payment plan to help those in our community who need access to affordable health care. Metro Health is committed to being a leader in serving the healthcare needs of the West Michigan community, and we are very pleased to be the first hospital to offer such a program."

More than 10 months in the making, Metro Care offers:

  • Community benefit discounts. All patients with no insurance are eligible to receive a discount of 40 percent on all of Metro’s healthcare services, from physician office visits to outpatient services to surgery.
  • CarePayment. Open to patients with more than $25 in out-of-pocket expenses, CarePayment divides the bill into 25 interest-free payments. No application is required and future charges can be added to the account.
  • Live Healthy. All Metro Health patients and community members are welcome to participate in Live Healthy classes, seminars and screenings. This community outreach program focuses on wellness and prevention, offering classes and free or low-cost screenings to address common health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, knee or hip pain and related issues.

"We would like to encourage our patients to take advantage of this program and to make regular visits to their primary-care physicians, which will help avoid the added expenses of seeking emergency room treatment when minor conditions escalate," Faas explained. "The discounted pricing in combination with the payment plan is designed to provide West Michigan residents with a little extra breathing room when it comes to their healthcare bills.

"As the leading community hospital, Metro Health strives to deliver the best patient experience and the best community experience. We feel that Metro Care is a creative solution that addresses one of the most pressing needs in our community today."
