Metro Health Thanks West Michigan 1,000 Times

Posted: May 12, 2010

Metro Health Hospital has wrapped up its 1,000 Acts of Thanks in West Michigan – even though its physicians and staff will continue to volunteer their time and talents.

The program, launched at the dedication ceremony when the new hospital opened in September 2007, was designed to thank the community its support during the construction and move to Wyoming. Metro physicians, management and staff individually and collectively initiated more than 1,000 volunteer activities over the last 32 months – or slightly more than one every day.

The initiative formally concluded when Metro Health Board members volunteered their time to assemble snack packs for Kids’ Food Basket, a Grand Rapids non-profit that works to reduce childhood hunger.

"As a community hospital, we feel it is vital for us to give back to the community where we serve patients," said Mike Faas, president and CEO. "When I announced this program at the dedication of the new hospital nearly three years ago, I didn’t envision the depth or breadth of what we would be able to do – or how our employees would respond.

"Activities ranged from individual acts of kindness for patients to large, organized efforts addressed at community needs. I am proud of how our employees volunteered their time and pleased to see that this program has sparked a continued commitment to the community at all levels of our organization."

Some of the 1,000 Acts of Thanks included:

  • A nurse who drove patients home when they could not afford the cost of a bus ticket
  • Support of large, non-profit walks sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
  • Free sports physicals for high school athletes
  • Warm blankets and clothing for families in need
  • Three free prostate cancer screening events
  • More than 4,000 free flu shots
  • Hand hygiene presentations for the Boy Scouts, Grand Rapids Public Schools and other organizations
  • First aid at the popular Wyoming Metro Cruise
  • Free outdoor concerts for the community
