Metro Health Hospital has named Ellen Buursma its 2010 Nurse Exemplar.
The award is given annually to recognize a registered nurse involved in direct patient care at Metro Health who has demonstrated exceptional nursing practice. Candidates are nominated by their peers. Metro’s Professional Nursing Council evaluates nominations based on the nurse’s ability to deliver outstanding care, stimulate critical thinking in her peers, provide continuous assistance, serve as a mentor and positively influence the work of the entire health-care team.
Buursma joined Metro Health in 1985 and currently works as a nurse in the Medical Surgical Pediatric department. She has also worked in oncology, orthopedics and IV therapy.
Her nomination form noted: “Ellen consistently goes above and beyond for patients and coworkers alike. She always has time for those that need her, regardless of what else she is trying to accomplish, and she does it with a smile.
“Ellen does not accept mediocrity and is well like and respected by all of her patients and coworkers. She is frequently sought out by her peers as an expert in the field and is an excellent example of what it means to be part of a team.”
Buursma resides in Middleville with her husband, Dennis, and two children.
