The award is given annually by Metro Health’s Professional Nursing Council, or PNC, to recognize a physician who exemplifies best practices and who also supports the role of nurses as part of the healthcare team. The hospital’s clinical nursing staff proposes candidates, and nominations are reviewed by the 13-member PNC, with the recipient selected by secret ballot.
Goebel specializes in internal medicine and is a hospitalist. He joined Metro health in 2000 and practices at the Best Practices Inpatient Care center located in Wyoming. He has been called a “steady and constant professional” who is approachable and always willing to answer questions from the nursing staff.
His nomination form noted: “It is easy to talk to Dr. Goebel. He is kind and fun to work with. He has a good attitude about questions and concerns and when asked to evaluate certain medical issues will act promptly and professionally. He is willing to explain and to teach, and one never has the feeling that he is bothered by this role.”
A native of Ann Arbor, Goebel received his undergraduate degree from Colorado State University and his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Science at Des Moines University. He completed his internship and internal medicine residency at St. John/Oakland Hospital, where he was chief resident. He also completed a faculty development fellowship at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
