Mary Wilson-Sept 2013_webMary Freund Wilson, a Metro Health nurse practitioner, has been awarded the American Diabetes Association’s 2014 Healthcare Champion Award.

Wilson was chosen for the award based on her long-time advocacy for people with diabetes. Wilson has dedicated her career to empowering her patients to live healthier lives in spite of the disease. She was a key member of the West Michigan Glycemic Collaborative, or WMGC, which came together in 2008 to measure, redesign and improve treatment and glycemic control for hospital patients with diabetes. The work ultimately resulted in the development of a set of best practices for inpatient diabetes care across the three hospital systems.

“Caring for patients with diabetes is my passion,” Wilson said. “I’m most proud that I get the honor and privilege of being involved in someone’s life and helping him or her feel successful as they gain confidence managing their diabetes. I love giving my patients the tools that they need to succeed in life regarding their diabetes.”

In 2013, Mary continued her work with WMCG, spearheading the development of a conference that continued the conversation among community diabetes practitioners. The conference showcased the ongoing work among West Michigan practitioners as the healthcare landscape continued to become more complex.

“Mary Wilson was one of 10 nominees for the Healthcare Champion Award this year,” says Gina Schulz, director of the Greater Michigan American Diabetes Association. “Our board of directors was impressed with the quality of nominees presented but found the combination of stellar patient care and advocacy with peer-recognized collaboration in Mary’s case to make her a clear winner.”

Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health, noted: “We are very proud Mary has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association. We are thankful for her passion, hard work and skill in caring for patients with diabetes and advancing knowledge in her field. Her efforts are truly deserving of the Healthcare Champion award.”

Metro Health provides a comprehensive education program for both inpatients and outpatients with diabetes. It also provides on-going diabetes support programs for people working at managing diabetes and their families.
