Chef Cook Off

July 31st is Health and Wellness Day at the Farm Market, which also means it’s the Metro Health’s annual Chef Cook Off! This year we have 4 chefs that will compete to make the tastiest dish using delicious & fresh foods from our very own farm market. The chefs will be put to the test to see who can make the most crowd pleasing food! Judges will conclude the winner of the event. Come hungry, taste testing samples will be available to try!

Meet The Chefs:
Chef Terri Rees- personal chef, culinary classroom instructor, demonstrator, and catererTerri Rees
Chef Terri Rees specializes in intimate dinner parties, culinary classroom education, demonstrations and select speaking engagements. She is passionate about your food and her mantra is “a personal chef experience.”  After spending 25+ plus years in corporate America in sales and project management she returned to Grand Rapids Community College graduating from their prestigious Culinary Arts Program.
She also volunteers in local food-oriented programs, teaching selection and preparation of healthy food for MSU Extension’s Cooking Matters, Family Network of Wyoming, and other organizations. She has been named the 2013 Chef Educator of the Year from the American Culinary Federation of Grand Rapids and has been featured in Parade Magazine.
Chef Terri Rees:
Chef Ryan Reynolds- Executive Chef at Metro Health Hospital

Ryan Reynolds is a self-trained chef whose cooking style can best be described as electrifying and avant-garde. Chef Ryan combines the best fresh ingredients in new and unexpected ways that can refresh the most jaded of diners. His resume includes, among others, the title of Executive Chef at the acclaimed Blue Moon Bar & Grille in Douglas, MI as well as 48 West and Taps in Grand Rapids.

Over the past 5 years, Chef Ryan has expanded his repertoire from fine dining into the world of corporations and hospitals, and has brought his  world of gourmet cuisine into café and catering services, consistently exceeding expectations and stunning customers with the quality and beauty of his dishes.

Chef Ryan’s menus are driven by the belief that food is both healthy and delicious, and that the two are not mutually exclusive. He works diligently to ensure that as many of his ingredients as possible are sourced locally, in order to guarantee the quality of the ingredients’ source and to support local vendors.

Chef Terrence O’Haire – owner of Propaganda Donuts, personal chef for the Supper Club

Torrence O'haireTorrence lives and works in Grand Rapids, Michigan, having grown up out in the countryside just east of the city. In 2009 he launched “The Starving Artist,” working as a private chef and culinary expert. As “The Starving Artist,” Torrence handles everything from private parties to public cooking classes to farm dinners to restaurant and bar consultation.

As a creative outlet and social experiment, Torrence founded the Full Moon Supper Club in 2010, an open-to-the-public, non-profit, floating dinner party, that has since become the longest-running and most-successful underground restaurant in Michigan. With monthly themed dinners and hundreds of active participants, The Full Moon Supper Club has been regularly highlighted in the media as one of the most exciting groups in the West Michigan food scene.

In January 2014, Torrence opened Propaganda Doughnuts, the region’s first-and-only from-scratch doughnut shop and patisserie, with a 1940’s pulp-fiction spy-novella theme. In August 2014, Torrence is opening The Bandit Queen, a spice-trade-themed Ramen bar catering heavily to late-night and service industry-folk in downtown Grand Rapids.

Chef Oliver Hale- Healthy Lifestyle chef and 2 time transplant survivor

Chef OThe foundation of Chef O started when was 6 years old, making cookies with his mother in the kitchen. Currently, he is a national healthy lifestyle chef who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chef O is also 0020Executive Producer and Host of his own weekly TV cooking show aired on a variety of public access stations in and around West Michigan. “CHEF O’S PLACE” is seen by millions of viewers throughout the area who tune in each week to meet Chef O’s celebrity guests and enjoy his ever-changing menus.

Chef O has been interviewed many times for articles in the Grand Rapids Press, Grand Rapids Magazine, USA Today, USTA Magazine and other national magazine. Since 2002, Chef O’s Place has won nine Philo T. Farnsworth Awards from the Central States Region of the Alliance for Community Media. He also received the 2001 Producer of The Year Award.  He has been asked to appear on “Top Chef” and “Chops” on the Food Network and serve on the Clinton Foundation “The Alliance for a Healthier Generation”.

He is also a member of TEAM MICHIGAN and TEAM USA transplant team. He and partner Bill Pryzbyz were the #1 Doubles Tennis Champions of the U.S. Transplant Games in 1998, 2000, and 2004, and #3 Doubles Tennis Champions of the World Transplant Games for 1997-1999.
