Amputation Prevention Program

The effects of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) can be devastating, often resulting in amputation. At Metro Heart & Vascular, we know that saving a limb, finger or toe improves quality of life by preserving independence and mobility. It may also save lives given the high mortality rate after amputation. We also believe that many amputations are unnecessary. That’s why we developed an Amputation Prevention Program.

Led by Dr. J.A. Mustapha, Director of Endovascular Intervention, the Metro Heart & Vascular Amputation Prevention Program seeks to avoid amputation of limbs by using a therapy similar to cardiac balloon angioplasty. Our cardiologists are nationally-recognized experts in minimally invasive procedures that restore circulation and save limbs – even down to the fingers and toes.

We understand that a comprehensive approach is needed to prevent amputation. Our specialists meet with each patient, evaluating the whole patient to collaboratively diagnose, treat and manage the main causes of amputation, infection, impaired circulation and wounds.

While we believe that most amputations are preventable, we know that not all limbs can be salvaged. In some cases a partial foot amputation may be necessary to spare the limb and can be a functional alternative to limb loss. At Metro Heart & Vascular, our specialists meet with each patient to diagnose and develop individualized treatment plans with compassion and care.  To view some of our patients’ stories, click here.
