Non-Invasive Peripheral Vascular Procedures

Cartoid Vascular Ultrasound Exam

What is it?  The carotid arteries provide blood flow to your brain.  This procedure provides information regarding the flow of blood, size, and shape of the carotid arteries.  Any abnormality and/or obstruction can be identified.

What happens during the test?  The test will take approximately 45 minutes.  Warm gel, which helps transmit the ultrasound, will be applied to your neck.  A small instrument, called an ultrasound transducer, will be moved over your neck to image the blood vessels and study the blood flow.

Preparing for the Test:

  • Take all medications at your regularly scheduled time, unless your physician tells you otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable clothing but please no turtlenecks or high fitting collars.

Helpful Information:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
  • Plan on your appointment lasting approximately 45 minutes.
  • Following your test you should be able to drive.  However, if you are not feeling well we will not allow you to leave until you feel better.
