Metro Health Receives Award for Waste Reduction

Grand Rapids, Michigan, May 15, 2007 -
Metro Health Hospital has received its second national award for its
efforts to reduce waste and prevent pollution.

Metro Health received its second consecutive H2E Partners for Change
Award from Hospitals for a Healthy Environment for its "remarkable
achievements in improving environmental performance." During the past
year, Metro Health:

  • Reduced its overall waste by 38 tons from 2004
  • Initiated a program to reduce its medical waste by 7.8 tons
  • Launched a program to reprocess non-invasive medical equipment
  • Implemented the use of reusable instrument containers
  • Transitioned to more environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals


"By reducing its environmental impact, Metro Health is playing a
pioneering role in health care’s shift toward protecting public
health," said Laura Brannen, executive director of H2E. "Metro Health
is creating a healthier environment for patients, staff and community
while setting an example for other hospitals to follow."

Metro Health has won several other quality awards recently, including
Solucient 100 Top Hospitals and CareScience Select Practice National
Quality Leader.
