John Oudshoorn Joins Metro Health as director of surgical services.

John Oudshoorn has joined Metro Health as director of surgical services.

Oudshoorn brings more than 35 years of health-care experience to his role at Metro Health. As director of surgical services, Oudshoorn will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing nursing care and services provided to patients and families in several areas of the hospital. Specifically, his areas of responsibility include surgery prep and recovery, the post-anesthesia care unit, the operating rooms, endoscopy, central sterile and surgery equipment.

Prior to joining Metro Health, Oudshoorn served as the director of clinical services and chief nursing officer at North Ottawa Community Hospital in Grand Haven, Mich. His background also includes positions of increasing responsibility at Fountain View of Holland, Priority Health Managed Benefits, Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids and Holland Community Hospital.

Oudshoorn is a veteran of the United Stated Navy and Naval Reserve, having served a total of more than 39 years. His tours included active duty during the Vietnam War, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also served as commanding officer of multiple units, retiring as a Navy Nurse Corp captain in 2004.

Active professionally and in the community, Oudshoorn is a member of the Michigan Organization of Nurse Executives, the Association of Operating Room Nurses and the Naval Reserve Association. He has also served as president of the Blue Heron Condominium Association Board and many leadership positions in his church fellowship.

Oudshoorn is a graduate of Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing and holds a bachelor of health sciences and a master of public administration focused on health care administration from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich. Oudshoorn now resides in Holland with his wife, Nancy. They have two married children.
