Five Ways to Fight Holiday Weight Gain
The holiday season is about celebrating with friends, family and often too many unhealthy meals and treats. Around 75% of annual weight gain takes place during the holidays. Here are five ways to avoid holiday weight gain:
1.Pack on the protein. Protein helps maintain a healthy weight and keeps you feeling full. Make sure to eat a good portion of turkey, roasted chicken, ham, lentils or beans with your meals.
2.Keep track of holiday snacking. Just because the holidays are a time to celebrate, doesn’t mean you should celebrate with sweet treats every day. Set aside one or two nights a week to enjoy yourself.
3.Start meals with a soup or salad. Studies have shown that you will eat less during a meal if you start off with a light soup or a salad. If you’re not sure if the hosts of your party will serve soup or salad, have some before you leave or offer to bring your own healthy dish.
4.Make a new holiday tradition. Get out with your family and friends and go sledding, skiing or take a walk outside. Besides burning extra calories, this will get everyone away from food for a while.
5.Sign up for a holiday competition. Most gyms offer fitness competitions to help encourage healthy habits during the holiday season. Or, sign up for Metro Health’s Hold it for the Holidays Challenge!
Our Hold it for the Holiday’s Challenge allows you to get a free body composition screen and challenge you to keep the weight off throughout the holiday season. If you keep those pesky pounds off, you will be entered to win a prize!
