Leg Fracture & Surgery

Leg Surgery

These instructions are a guideline so you know more what to expect before and after your surgery.

  • Your post-operative appointment was made at the time your surgery was scheduled.
  • Wear comfortable loose clothing to the hospital on the day of your surgery.
  • You will be given a prescription for pain medication at the hospital after surgery.
  • You may resume driving when you are able to control your vehicle and no longer taking narcotic pain medication.
  • You may remove your dressings after 2 days. You may shower as usual. Blot the incision dry and cover with a band-aid. Do not soak in a bath or use a hot tub until your stitches have been removed.
  • Do not remove your stitches. These will be taken out at your postoperative appointment.
  • A temperature over 101 degrees or a foul smelling drainage is not normal. Call our office if you experience any of these symptoms.
  • If you notice that your toes are very fat, difficult to bend and straighten or turning a purplish color, you need to get your knee and ankle above the level of your heart. Put several pillows underneath your leg and lie on the couch or bed. This will help to get the swelling out of your lower leg. Wiggle your toes several times a day to help with the circulation as well.
  • If you over do it, this swelling and soreness is going to be your indication, back off on your activities a bit and gradually increase as you tolerate it.
  • Use ice as needed for pain and swelling.
