Metro Health is Again Named a National 100 Top Hospital!
For the second year in a row, Metro Health Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by a leading independent survey.
The 2007 Thomson 100 Top Hospitals® award, formerly known as Solucient, honors hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency and other benchmarks when compared against their peers. The 2007 awards covered the period of time when Metro Health Hospital was deeply involved in planning its move to its new location in Wyoming.
Metro Health was recognized in the "teaching hospitals" category. Metro Health is a leading trainer of osteopathic physicians, training over 100 physicians and students at all times in close association with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. The awards were detailed in the March 17 edition of Modern Healthcare, the health-care industry’s leading trade journal.
"This is the second consecutive year that Metro Health has been among an elite group of hospitals recognized as one of the nation’s best," said Mike Faas, president and CEO. "The Thomson award is highly competitive, and it is unusual for hospitals to remain on the Top 100 list from year to year.
"This award is particularly gratifying as it covered the period of time surrounding the move to our new facility. Despite the stresses inherent in the move, our 2,700-plus physicians and employees were able to maintain a tremendous standard of quality and care in order to secure Metro Health’s place on this prestigious list."
Data for the 100 Top Hospitals National Benchmarks for Success award was compiled and analyzed by Thomson, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. More than 3,000 hospitals nationwide were analyzed for their clinical, operational and financial performance.
Metro Health Hospital is a 208-bed general acute care osteopathic teaching hospital that serves more than 130,000 patients in Kent and surrounding counties. Metro Health offers a broad range of services, including inpatient and outpatient services, emergency, surgery, intensive care, rehabilitation, wellness and community education.
"The Thomson study is one of the most rigorous analyses of any of the health-care awards," Faas explained. "The organization looks at data gathered by Medicare from all hospitals, which ensures an apples-to-apples comparison. Hospitals do not apply for the award; it is unsolicited praise from the most respected and independent of sources."
According to the study, the highest performance levels in patient safety were achieved by the 100 hospitals in the study that delivered the highest balanced performance across quality, efficiency and financial stability.
"Employers, health plans and hospitals need to take note that we have entered a new phase in driving transformation of the healthcare industry," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president in the Center for Healthcare Improvement at Thomson Healthcare. "Hospitals setting new levels of patient safety are those with the highest balanced scores across quality, efficiency, and financial performance."
Nearly half of the winning hospitals in the 2007 study are from the Midwest. Metro Health joins 13 other hospitals from Michigan among the top performers.
