Metro Health Hospital Receives National Award for Stroke Care

Metro Health Hospital has received a national award for its excellent care in treating patients experiencing a stroke.

The hospital was recognized with a 2014 Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award from the Quality Registry “Get with the Guidelines” program, or GWTG.  GWTG is a national standard of quality for patients with stroke. The award recognizes Metro’s commitment and success in implementing this higher standard of care for stroke patients according to levels of care outlined by the American Heart/Stroke Association clinical guidelines.

These guidelines include timely completion and interpretation of emergent stroke CT scans, completing lab studies and administration of clot-dissolving medication within national standards.  Metro Health consistently exceeded performance standards for four consecutive quarters to be eligible for this award.

In an effort to deliver excellent care to all stroke patients, Metro Health:

  • Uses standardized admission orders for all patients experiencing stroke and related symptoms
  • Provides smoking cessation information to all patients upon admission, whether they smoke or not
  • Uses standardized discharge instructions
  • Provide patient and family education to avoid another stroke
  • Continuing education for the stroke treatment team professionals
