Metro Health Named One of Nation’s Top 100 Hospitals

March 14, 2007

Grand Rapids, Michigan, March 14, 2007 –
Metro Health Hospital has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top
Hospitals by a leading independent survey – the only hospital in the
greater Grand Rapids area to be recognized.

The award honors hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical
outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency and other
benchmarks when compared against their peers. Metro Health was
recognized in the "teaching hospitals" category – the only hospital in
Southwest Michigan to be recognized. Metro Health is a leading trainer
of osteopathic physicians, training 100 physicians and students
annually in association with Michigan State University College of
Osteopathic Medicine.

The awards were detailed in the March 12 edition of Modern Healthcare, the health-care industry’s leading trade journal.

Data for the award was compiled and analyzed by Solucient®, a leading
provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality
of health care. More than 2,800 hospitals nationwide were analyzed for
their clinical, operational and financial performance.

"Metro Health is delighted to be recognized as one of the nation’s 100
Top Hospitals," said Mike Faas, president and CEO. "While Metro Health
has been honored to receive many quality awards over the years, this
acknowledgement numbers among the most significant – it is the
equivalent of an Academy Award in our industry. We are especially
delighted to be recognized as a teaching hospital.

"Our 2,200 employees deserve the credit for achieving this distinction.
They consistently deliver quality health care in a caring environment
that ensures the needs of our patients and their families are always
the top priority."

Metro Health is a regional health-care organization with a 238-bed
acute-care osteopathic teaching hospital and 10 neighborhood outpatient
centers that annually serve more than 130,000 patients from across the
region. In the fall of 2007, Metro Health will move into a new
480,000-square-foot hospital in southern Kent County, making the
organization the first suburban hospital in Grand Rapids.

In the analysis for the award, which was drawn from Medicare data
reported by all hospitals, Metro Health Hospital ranked better than its
peers in the majority of categories. When compared against their peers,
Metro Health patients:

  • Were able to go home more quickly
  • Had fewer complications
  • Had better outcomes in key areas, including heart attacks and pneumonia
  • Enjoyed an overall safer hospital experience
  • Paid less for their stays

The Solucient study is one of the most rigorous analyses of any of the
health-care awards," Faas explained. "The organization looks at data
gathered by Medicare from all hospitals, which ensures an
apples-to-apples comparison. Hospitals do not apply for the award; it
is unsolicited praise from the most respected and independent of

More than half of the winning hospitals in the 2006 study are from the
Midwest. Metro Health joins 29 other hospitals from Michigan and Ohio
among the top performers.

"The heavy concentration of high-performing hospitals in the Midwest
represents the effectiveness and commitment of hospital leaders in the
region," says Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president of performance
improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs. "When 75 percent of the
states in a single region perform at such high levels, it reflects a
single-minded focus on raising performance levels.

"The concentration of…the 100 Top Hospitals in Michigan and Ohio is a
tribute to the effort these hospitals’ boards, CEOs and medical staff
leaders have made to increase the value of services to their
communities and patients."

Other key findings include the fact that Benchmark hospitals:

  • Treated more patients than other hospitals. These patients were also sicker and required more complex treatment.
  • Spent an average of 12 percent less, per patient discharged, than peer hospitals.
  • Paid an average of $3,200 more annually in salaries and benefits
