Metro Health Named One of the Greenest Hospitals in America

Metro Health Hospital has been named one of the “50 Greenest Hospitals in America” by Becker’s Healthcare Review.

Metro Health was one of only seven hospitals in Michigan to receive the recognition for its sustainability initiatives.  Becker’s called Metro and other acute-care hospitals on this year’s list “forward-thinking institutions that lead sustainability efforts by example” and “demonstrate how environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility.”

The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team used several resources to develop this list, including Health Care Without Harm, Practice Greenhealth, the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, the EPA and other healthcare sustainability organizations and experts.

Metro was also recently recognized as one of the 101 Best & Brightest Sustainable companies in Michigan, one of only three hospitals statewide to receive this award. It is a five-time winner of Practice Greenhealth’s Environmental Leadership Circle award, the highest honor given by the organization.

Metro Health was one of the first full-service hospitals in the country to be LEED certified and is home to Michigan’s second largest green roof.  The hospital’s green initiatives include:

  • Community program to collect and dispose of unused medication and mercury thermometers
  • Cafeteria and kitchen composting program
  • Comprehensive green cleaning program
  • Participation in Greening the OR initiative
