Metro Health Names 2014 Nurse Exemplar and Nursing-Chosen Physician of the Year

Shirley BrinksMetro Health Hospital has named Shirley Brinks its 2014 Nurse Exemplar and Dr. Andrew Michmerhuizen its 2014 Nursing-Chosen Physician of the Year.

The Nurse Exemplar award is given annually to recognize a registered nurse involved in direct patient care at Metro Health who has demonstrated exceptional nursing practice. T heir peers and physician colleagues nominate candidates, then Metro’s Professional Nursing Council, or PNC, evaluates nominations based on the nurse’s ability to deliver outstanding care that goes beyond what is expected, stimulate critical thinking in her peers, provide continuous assistance, serve as a mentor and positively influence the work of the entire health-care team.

The Physician of the Year award is given annually by Metro Health’s PNC to recognize a physician who exemplifies best practices and who also supports the role of nurses as part of the healthcare team. The hospital’s clinical nursing staff proposes candidates, and nominations are reviewed by the PNC, with the recipient selected by secret ballot.

Brinks joined Metro Health in 1986 and currently works as a nurse in the pre-surgical testing and surgery prep and recovery department. According to her nomination form: “This nurse is often one of the first Metro employees that patients talk to. She does a wonderful job helping patients feel at ease. She makes a great first impression that instills confidence that Metro is a safe place to come for care. Her professionalism, calm demeanor, and non-threatening communication style elicit confidence and expertise.”

Additionally her nomination went on to highlight the measurable difference Brinks brings to Metro’s surgical practices. “Because of this nurse’s behind-the-scenes hard work; consistent, personal care; rapport with her patients; and her unshakable support for those of us lucky enough to be in this department, we have attained some very high marks as a department in this West Michigan community of hospitals: low surgical cancellation rates and, also, very importantly, a very low incidence of surgical infection.”

Dr. Andrew MichmerhuizenMichmerhuizen is an emergency medicine physician with Certified Emergency Medicine Specialists who works in the Metro Health Emergency Department. He joined Metro in 1999 as a volunteer, worked as a patient transporter and then became a technician in the emergency department where he worked until 2002. Michmerhuizen graduated from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed his internship and residency in emergency medicine at Metro Health.

Michmerhuizen’s nomination form notes: “This physician is transparent in all his interactions with staff. He provides, invites and seeks collaborative teamwork to optimize care for patients. In emergent situations, he will debrief with all team members to ensure the best possible care had been provided. He is known amongst the staff as being approachable, open and a physician who will take the time to explain and educate any staff member who has questions.”

His nomination form went on to highlight: “The positive relationship he has built with the nursing staff contributes to an enriched partnership with the entire physician group and results in better patient outcomes and greater staff satisfaction. This physician is an asset to staff and patients alike.”
