Metro Health to Provide Stroke Screenings

April 5, 2007

Metro Health is working to educate West
Michigan residents about their risk of stroke, stroke prevention and
recognizing the signs of stroke during May, which is recognized
nationally as Stroke Month.

Metro Health will be providing free stroke screenings and education at
Metro Health Hospital, 1919 Boston SE in Grand Rapids on Thursday, May
3, from 2-6 p.m. Visitors will have access to free stroke risk
assessments, blood pressure and pulse checks, dietary evaluations and
blood glucose screenings.

A recent American Stroke Association study shows that baby boomers may
know the signs and symptoms of stroke, but don’t see stroke as a major
health risk. The risk for strokes increase at the age of 55.
Controllable risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol, blood
pressure and obesity.

The screenings are free and open to the public. Metro Health is a certified stroke center.

Additionally, Metro will again display the West Michigan Stroke
Awareness Quilt, which celebrates the lives of people who have fallen
victim to strokes. Inspired by the beauty and message of the National
Stroke Quilt when it visited Grand Rapids in 2005, several area stroke
survivors and their families put together a West Michigan Stroke
Awareness Quilt. The quilt will be displayed in Metro Health Hospital’s
