Metro Health Receives Blue Distinction® Center Designation for Hip and Knee, Maternity Care

Metro Health Hospital has been recognized for its expertise in hip and knee replacements and in maternity care by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan.

The hospital received a Blue Distinction Center status for knee and hip replacement. This distinction recognizes Metro as a leader in delivering safe, high-quality specialty hip and knee care. The status was awarded based on criteria that directly impact patient results. These criteria included the surgical team’s expertise and its history of better outcomes for patients, as measured by fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions.

Knee and hip replacement procedures are among the fastest growing medical treatments in the U.S., according to the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Metro Health’s highly skilled physicians, surgeons and clinical specialists provide a wide range of orthopedic hip and knee care. With specialized training in orthopedic surgery, they are able to diagnose and treat even the most complicated orthopedic conditions.

The Spartan Stores Family Childbirth Center at Metro Health was recognized with a Blue Distinction Center+ designation for maternity care. It was evaluated on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery. Early-term infants face higher risks of death and respiratory ailments, in addition to higher rate of admission to neonatal intensive care units.

The Spartan Stores Family Childbirth Center was also judged based on overall patient satisfaction and patients’ willingness to recommend the hospital to others. The center met requirements based on evidence-based practices of care. It was also recognized for maintaining programs that promote successful breastfeeding as well as requirements for cost efficiency.

“The Blue Distinction Center designation lets our members know where they can go in Michigan to receive high-quality care that meets robust clinical standards,” said David Share, MD, MPH, senior vice president at Blue Cross. “Congratulations to all of the hospitals earning these designations.”

Blue Distinction is a national designation program developed in collaboration with the medical community. It recognizes facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care safely, efficiently and cost effectively.
