Metro Health Receives Funding to Help Special Needs Volunteers

The Metro Health Hospital Foundation is providing a grant to ensure that special needs students volunteering in the Metro Health Café receive required uniforms -at no charge.

Metro Health Hospital partners annually with Grandville Schools Region III to offer students with special needs the opportunity to learn skills that will assist them in transitioning to adult life and possible future employment. The program currently serves 16 students who volunteer assisting the food service staff with tasks such as cleaning tables, sorting silverware and other support in the café.

The Foundation donated funds to cover the costs of the uniforms.

“This is a wonderful program and partnership,” said Maureen Bednarek, Metro Health volunteer services manager. “The students arrive eager and excited to help in the café, and their energy is infectious.

“The position requires students to wear Metro Health polo shirts, and we want to make sure that it is not a cost incurred by the students. These students take pride in their uniforms and in the work that they do. They are an important piece of the Metro Health community, and we are glad to have them.”

Students participating in the volunteer program have the opportunity to gain employment with the hospital in the future.
