Metro Health Receives Top Marks for Surgery, Patient Safety from Consumer Reports

Metro Health Hospital has received a top grade for surgery safety from Consumer Reports – the only hospital in West Michigan and one of only seven in the state to receive the highest mark.

The annual “Safer Surgery Guide,” which appears in the September edition of the publication, used Medicare data on 27 routine surgeries to arrive at the comparisons.  Metro Health was ranked as one of the safest hospitals in Michigan for operations from knee replacements to spinal surgery.  The Consumers Report guide analyzed data from more than 2,400 hospitals across the United States.

Metro Health also received high marks for patient safety, which was measured by a mix of indicators, including avoiding serious complications and readmissions, pain control, doctor-patient communication, effectively managing the discharge process and other areas.

“We are extremely pleased with our Consumer Reports rating as one of the top hospitals in Michigan when it comes to both surgical and patient safety,” said Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health.  “We regularly receive awards for patient safety and quality of care, which remain two of our top priorities.

“The overall findings in this study were particularly interesting:  The study noted that  ‘big name hospitals don’t always live up to their reputation’ when it comes to surgery.  At Metro Health, we recognize that size doesn’t really matter — quality does.  In fact, our small size contributes to our ability to really focus on patients and their families and allows us to provide top-quality care.”

Consumer Reports noted that, “The safest hospitals pay close attention to details.”  Faas concurred, noting that designers borrowed best practices from some of the nation’s leading healthcare providers to build the new hospital, which opened in September 2007.

For example, all patient rooms are configured identically, which improves efficiency and reduces the chance of medication errors.  Each of the all-private rooms features a “nurse server,” a secure area that houses patient medications.

The article encouraged consumers to “check up” on their hospitals before making a decision for surgery by:

  • Getting firsthand experience from friends and family
  • Verifying what insurance will – and will not – cover
  • Utilizing the Consumer Reports ratings, as well as other sources such as Hospital Compare, Leapfrog Group and state health departments

In addition to the surgical and patient safety ratings from Consumer Reports, Metro has won awards for its treatment of heart attacks and strokes, management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, patient care outcomes, clinical excellence and safety and innovative use of technology.
