Metro Health – University of Michigan Health Continues to Expand Women’s Health Services
With a new Women’s Health Center now open and gynecologic oncology services being added this spring, Metro Health – University of Michigan Health continues its expansion of advanced care for West Michigan women.
Metro Health now has 10 OB/GYNs and two Advanced Practice Providers accepting new patients at locations across the region. This includes nine neighborhood offices, Metro Health Village in Wyoming and the newest location, the Women’s Health Center at 4055 Cascade Road SE.
The center opened in December at the Metro Health East Campus, just off the I-96 exit, near East Paris Avenue. The newly renovated space features a spa-like atmosphere that unites all OB/GYN services, advanced outpatient surgery and access to multiple services, all under one roof. Services include 3D ultrasound, infertility evaluation and treatment, on-site mammography, gynecological exams, pregnancy and childbirth care, and menopausal care, along with dozens of other services.
“This is part of our purposeful approach to identifying health needs in West Michigan, and providing care for a healthier community,” said Dr. Peter Hahn, CEO. “We know there is a growing need for OB/GYN care, including in oncology.”
The gynecologic oncology subspecialty will be added this spring to treat patients facing those types of cancer, diagnosed in about 89,000 women a year in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Our OB/GYNs develop relationships with patients that last decades, for generations of women, throughout their reproductive lives,” said Steven Lown, DO, medical director Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Part of that long-term commitment means being able to provide a complete range of care, at the highest level of expertise.”
Providing access to OB/GYNs will remain important in coming years. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) estimates the United States faces a shortage of between 6,000 and 8,800 OB/GYNs by the year 2020 and possibly 22,000 by the year 2050.
Metro Health’s recent expansion of women’s health care began in 2017, when the former Michigan Obstetrics and Gynecology, PC, joined Metro Health. That was followed by the addition of several providers to Metro Health’s experienced OB/GYN team.
