Metro Health’s Mike Faas Receives MHA Health Care Leadership Award

Faas-lobby_v copyMetro Health President and CEO Mike Faas has received the 2012 Health Care Leadership Award from the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, MHA.

The award honors outstanding individuals who have provided exceptional leadership to healthcare organizations and to the health and well being of their communities. Faas, who has led Metro since 1994, was one of three chief executives of community hospitals to be recognized this year.

“If you listen to Mike Faas talk for even a few minutes, it’s clear: he’s committed to our community,” said Doyle Hayes, chair of the Metro Health Corporate Board of Directors. “At the heart of his beliefs about health care is one that says ‘All health care is local.’ To that end, Mike has made it his priority to ensure that Metro Health is here to serve our West Michigan community.

“We are extraordinarily pleased that he has been honored by MHA with a 2012 Healthcare Leadership Award.”

Faas was recognized for his many contributions to Metro Health and the greater West Michigan community, including:
– Spearheading the effort to successfully relocate the hospital to a new state-of-the-art LEED-certified facility south of its former location
– Establishing a partnership with the University of Michigan Health System to bring its world-class cancer treatment to West Michigan on the Metro campus
– Parterning with U of M and Trinity Health to create Pennant Health Alliance, designed to allow community hospitals like Metro Health to retain their independence
– Fostering creative programs, such as an award-winning recycling program, annual farm market, campus-wide composting and a community garden

With more than 25 years working in the healthcare field, Faas has held previous leadership positions such as senior vice president of operations of St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and co-CEO of the Borgess Metro Health Alliance. At Metro Health, he has responsibility for the hospital, neighborhood outpatient centers and its more than 2,500 physicians, nurses and staff.
