For physicians, residents and their spouses.
Burnout is physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress, and we are ALL at risk of suffering it – conflicting demands on our time, loss of control (real or imagined) and a diminishing sense of worth grind at us from every direction. Some studies show that 50% to 60% of physicians currently suffer from professional burnout, making the lifetime risk a virtual certainty. That doesn’t mean that with some simple tools we cannot identify the causes and symptoms and take simple steps to reverse the threat.
Dr. Roger Smith is Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Professor of Clinical Biologic Sciences, at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
