Spartan Stores Celebrates Opening of New Metro Health Hospital With Special Program for Babies, New Families

First Baby to Receive Approximately $135,000 in College Scholarship Funds from Spartan Stores; All Parents Receive Welcome Bag

Wyoming, Michigan,
October 1,
2007 – The parents of the first baby born at the new Metro Health
Hospital won’t have to
worry how to pay for college – thanks to a generous gift from the Spartan
Stores Foundation.

The Grand Rapids-based grocer and grocery
distributor plans to celebrate the birth of the first child at the new Spartan Stores Family
Childbirth Center
at Metro Health by presenting the parents with $25,000 in scholarship
funds. The initial seed money will be
invested in a 529 plan through the state of Michigan, and could be worth as much as
$135,000, depending on interest rates, by the time Metro’s first baby is ready
for college.

The first parents, along with the parents of all
children born at the new Metro
Health Hospital,
will also receive a "welcome bag" of essential new baby items, informational
books, a keepsake photo frame and other goodies. Metro Health will join in the celebration of
the first birth in its new hospital by presenting the first baby with a $1,000
savings bond.

Metro Health will complete the move into its new
state-of-the-art hospital in Southeast
Kent County
on Sunday, Sept. 30, as it transfers all patients and closes the doors on its
current facility in Grand Rapids. Hospital officials expect the first baby at
the new facility could come as early as move day.

"What a privilege it is for us to support new moms
and babies in the new Spartan Stores Family
Childbirth Center
at Metro Health Hospital,"
said Craig Sturken, president and CEO of Spartan Stores.

"We are delighted to present the parents of Metro
Health’s first baby with a college scholarship fund that will grow along with
their child – and likely cover the complete costs of a four-year degree.

"We are also pleased to unveil a program that will
help all new parents at Metro get started on the right foot. We are very proud to have this beautiful new
facility in our neighborhood."

Spartan Stores will also give parents of all new
babies a sturdy, green tote bag made of recyclable material and filled with
baby items donated by Spartan and its vendors. Although individual products and
vendors may change over the years, the
bags will initially include items such as Caring
for Your New Baby & Young Child
and American
Academy Guide of Pediatrics Guide to Breastfeeding
, a storybook, diapers,
wipes, pacifier, bib, CD, a rubber duck and other items.

Vendors donating items include Ascendia Brands (Baby
Magic), Clorox, Gerber Products Co., Kimberly Clark, Mead-Johnson, Abbott
NutritionRoss Labs and TopCo. Spartan
Stores will also donate a $25 gift card redeemable at 11 neighboring Family
Fare grocery stores with the transfer of a prescription to Spartan Stores.

"We want to thank all of our business partners who
have generously provided gifts and support to these new parents," said Alan
Hartline, senior vice president of merchandising at Spartan Stores. "Promoting health and well-being is important
to us at Spartan Stores. A strong
business partnership with our vendors and with health-care providers such as
Metro allows us to better align our business goals to meet the needs of our

Michael Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health,
noted: "Each year, more than 1,600
babies come into the world at Metro
Health Hospital. The new Spartan Stores
Family Childbirth
Center is a warm,
welcoming environment that puts the needs of new mothers and babies first, and
we are very pleased to partner with the company to promote health and wellness
in the communities we both serve.

"Metro Health is gratified by the generous support
from Spartan Stores, from its sponsorship of the childbirth center to the
$25,000 scholarship for the first baby to the wonderful welcome bags planned
for all new families."

In addition to supporting the hospital’s childbirth
center, Spartan Stores is also the signature sponsor of the new YMCA scheduled
to be built in the surrounding Metro
Health Village. The proposed Spartan Stores YMCA, which is
slated to open its doors in 2009, is on the leading edge of a trend that integrates medical services into a wellness-center

new Metro Health
Hospital, which is the only suburban
hospital in the Grand Rapids
area, was designed to enhance quality, improve access, increase convenience and
reduce cost. It is the only hospital in West Michigan – and one of a few in the nation – to utilize
identical room layouts to improve patient safety.

The new Spartan Stores
Family Childbirth
Center, located on the
second floor, is designed to keep mothers and babies as healthy and comfortable
as possible. The new childbirth center features:

  • Eight labor and delivery rooms, along with one surgical
    suite for cesarean deliveries.
  • 23 post-partum recovery rooms, furnished with a couch that
converts into a bed, flat-screen television and Internet access.
  • A 24-hour nursery, which will give new mothers needed rest
    and recovery time.

Metro Health sits at the heart of a
170-acre health-care village, a mixed-use development devoted to promoting
healthy lifestyles. All tenants must agree to develop LEED-certified buildings,
