Spartan Stores YMCA to be Located at Metro Health Village

March 28, 2007

Metro Health Village will be the new
home of the Spartan Stores YMCA – the first medical-wellness
partnership in the M-6 corridor.

The Spartan Stores YMCA will be located on eight acres at Gezon Parkway
and Metro Way on the northeast corner of Metro Health Village.
Partnering with Metro Health, the new YMCA will integrate medical
services into a wellness-center environment. Patients who receive
services in this setting will have access to the facilities of the YMCA
as part of their treatment.

The Spartan Stores YMCA was made possible through a generous $3 million
dollar lead gift from the Spartan Stores Foundation and will offer
medical, wellness and child care services for residents of Kent, Ottawa
and Allegan counties.

In mid-April 2007, the YMCA will begin an extensive, community-wide
assessment to evaluate the programs and facility features that are of
greatest interest to residents within the service area of the Spartan
Stores YMCA. The facility plans to break ground this fall with a goal
of openings its doors in the fall of 2008.

"We are delighted to welcome the Spartan Stores YMCA to Metro Health
Village," said Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health. "When we
began construction on the Village in 2003, one of our key goals was to
bring the medical fitness center concept to Grand Rapids. This
partnership brings us so much more – it fulfills the goal of developing
the Village to help individuals lead healthier lives, and it extends
our collective reach further into the community.

The vision and focus of each of our three organizations comes back to
health and well-being. We are honored to align Metro Health with the
YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids and Spartan Stores."

Ron Nelson, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids,
echoed these thoughts, noting: "We are extremely pleased to locate our
eighth YMCA facility in Metro Health Village. Across the country, only
a handful of YMCA Associations have partnered with hospitals to provide
programs and services that integrate traditional fitness components
with health management. We are delighted to pioneer the concept here in
West Michigan."

Unique to the Spartan Stores YMCA is the medical-wellness component.
Medical-wellness services could include physical therapy, sports
medicine and a variety of prevention education clinics/programs.

"The concept of offering medically supervised treatment programs in a
wellness center setting is a cutting-edge trend in American medicine,"
Faas said. "The combination of treatment and prevention in a YMCA will
make this new facility very distinctive. Not only will this expand the
continuum of Metro’s care, it will also allow us to tailor programs to
the community, improve outcomes for patients with chronic disease and
assist in preventing disease."

The Spartan Stores YMCA, as with all facilities in the Metro Health
Village, will be built according to Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design, or LEED, principles. This will allow the YMCA of
Greater Grand Rapids to become the first YMCA Association ever to have
two LEED-certified branches.

The Village, which is designed to host more than 40 buildings
eventually, now has commitments for nearly 400,000 square feet of space
in addition to the 500,000 square-foot hospital. Other facilities in
development include physician offices, out-patient medical services
centers, retail outlets and residential condominiums. It is believed to
be the largest mixed-use LEED development of its kind.

While plans for the new facility are still in a preliminary phase,
officials from Metro Health and the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids expect
the facility to include the following:

  • Metro Health’s sports medicine and physical therapy services
  • Whirlpool
  • Indoor warm water swimming pool
  • Wellness center
  • Youth wellness center
  • Gymnasium
  • Licensed day care center
  • Indoor walking/running track
  • Free weights and exercise equipment
  • Multi-purpose fitness rooms for group exercise and programs
  • Chapel
  • Teen center

"Having the Spartan Stores YMCA on campus allows Metro Health to extend
our continuum of care by adding more preventive and wellness services,"
Faas said.
