Joe Niekro Foundation™ Support Group
Stroke Support Group
The Comprehensive Stroke Care program at Metro Health has formed a new partnership with the Joe Niekro Foundation to establish the West Michigan chapter of the Joe Niekro Foundation™ Support Group. We invite patients, family members and caregivers who have been affected by stroke, brain aneurysm, transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or arteriovenous malformation (AVM) to participate in the support group.
The goal of the support group is to help patients and family members discuss and deal with issues such as depression, returning to society and work, and coping with disabilities. Programs will provide access to health professionals, share information on nutrition and wellness, and offer the benefit of shared experience.
The Joe Niekro Foundation™ (JNF) is the “brain child” of Joe’s daughter, Natalie Niekro. After her father died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm in 2006 at age 61, Natalie started the JNF to educate and encourage awareness, research and support about brain aneurysms and other cerebral vascular disorders. A former major league baseball player, Joe Niekro won 221 games in 22 seasons as a knuckleball pitcher. During his career, Joe played for multiple teams, including the Detroit Tigers.
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Metro Health Conference Center. Click here to see upcoming meetings and register today.
