  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Services

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) uses hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat illness or injury. Simply put, OMM is hands-on care.

With OMM, physicians use their hands to diagnose, treat and prevent illness or injury though special techniques, called Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments (OMT). These treatments move the muscles and joints by stretching, providing gentle pressure or using resistance. These techniques can help ease chronic pain, promote healing and increase a patient’s mobility.

Women’s bodies are unique, and they experience a variety of different issues that men’s bodies do not. OMM can be used to help treat a number of issues that women face, from headaches and neck pain to menstrual pain and osteoarthritis. It can also be used to relieve muscles and joints that have been aggravated during pregnancy or to treat babies with feeding or reflux difficulties. OMM may also be helpful with problems such as asthma, digestive disorders and recurrent sinus or ear infections.

All osteopathic physicians, or DOs, are trained to administer OMT, but certain physicians have received additional training by completing residencies in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (NMM), and can provide advanced OMM care. Find a physician who specializes in providing advanced OMM care.

OMM provides holistic and patient-centered care that consider the whole person – mind, body and spirit. It is part of Metro Health’s history and is an example of how we provide better care for our patients, everyday.
